چکیده

In this paper we present a characteristic method for solving the transfer equation in differentially moving media in a curved spacetime. The method is completely general, but its capabilities are exploited at best in presence of symmetries, when the existence of conserved quantities allows to derive analytical expressions for the photon trajectories in phase space. In spherically–symmetric, stationary configurations the solution of the transfer problem is reduced to the integration of a single ordinary differential equation along the bi–parametric family of characteristic rays. Accurate expressions for the radiative processes relevant to continuum transfer in a hot astrophysical plasma have been used in evaluating the source term, including relativistic e–p, e–e bremsstrahlung and Compton scattering. A numerical code for the solution of the transfer problem in moving media in a Schwarzschild spacetime has been developed and tested. Some applications, concerning “hot” and “cold” accretion onto non–rotating black holes as well as static atmospheres around neutron stars, are presented and discussed. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks – numerical methods – radiative transfer – relativity

Multipole and relativistic effects in radiative recombination process in hot plasmas.

On the basis of the fully relativistic Dirac-Fock treatment of photoionization and radiative recombination processes with regard to all multipoles of the radiative field, we have assessed the influence of nondipole effects on the radiative recombination rate coefficients. A formula for the rate coefficient has been derived using the relativistic Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of continuum elect...

Conservative special relativistic radiative transfer for multidimensional astrophysical simulations: motivation and elaboration

Many astrophysical phenomena exhibit relativistic radiative flows. While velocities in excess of v ∼ 0.1c can occur in these systems, it has been common practice to approximate radiative transfer to O(v/c). In the case of neutrino transport in core-collapse supernovae, this approximation gives rise to an inconsistency between the lepton number transfer and lab frame energy transfer, which have ...

Propagation Effects in Magnetized Transrelativistic Plasmas

The transfer of polarized radiation in magnetized and non-magnetized relativistic plasmas is an area of research with numerous flaws and gaps. The present paper is aimed at filling some gaps and eliminating the flaws. Starting from a Trubnikov’s linear response tensor for a vacuum wave with k = ω/c in thermal plasma, the analytic expression for the dielectric tensor is found in the limit of hig...

Collisional Plasma Models with Apec/aped: Emission Line Diagnostics of Hydrogen-like and Helium-like Ions

New X-ray observatories (Chandra and XMM-Newton) are providing a wealth of high-resolution X-ray spectra in which hydrogenand helium-like ions are usually strong features. We present results from a new collisional-radiative plasma code, the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Code (apec), which uses atomic data in the companion Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database (aped) to calculate spectral model...

X-ray Enabled Mocassin: a 3d Code for Photoionized Media

We present a new version of the fully 3D photoionization and dust radiative transfer code, mocassin, that uses a Monte Carlo approach for the transfer of radiation. The X-ray enabled mocassin allows a fully geometry independent description of low-density gaseous environments strongly photoionized by a radiation field extending from radio to gamma rays. The code has been thoroughly benchmarked a...
